The UAE, an acronym for United Arab Emirates, was born in 1971 when the British relinquished their control over the region and is a federation of seven states, known as the Emirates. It is one of the few nations in the world which has emerged to establish itself firmly as a leading commercial hub and a liberal nation amidst staunch and hostile neighbours.

The earliest known record of UAE dates back to 5500 BC, which mentions its trade involvement with Arabia. During 17th and 19th centuries some tribal sheikhs of Arabian Peninsula turned out to be a terror for trading ships in spite of the strict patrol conducted by European and Arab naval ships. It is these tribes which inhabited the southern coast of Arabian Gulf and north-western coast of Gulf of Oman that unified and formed the U.A.E. For long they underwent disputes amongst themselves for superiority and these have been described as dynasty disputes by historians.

In subsequent years several peace treaties were signed amongst the British and the principal sheikhs along the coast to control the hostilities at sea. Some of the treaties also ensured that the sheikhs need not relinquish the right to any territory to any other country other than the British who in return promised to provide protection from external attacks launched from both land and sea frontiers.

In the year 1868, the independent kingdoms entered into a treaty with United Kingdom and were named as Trucial states or Trucial Oman. Most often the disputes between the states were resolved by the British. In 1960, the Trucial State council was formed and by the year 1968, nine regions which were under the treaty relationships with the British, attempted to form a union as the British intended to terminate the alliance. However since Bahrain and Qatar could not come to a common agreement, they were both accorded the status of independent nations. By December 1971, six of the regions entered into a union called United Arab Emirates. The seventh, Ras al-Khaimah joined later in 1972.

Subsequent to being formed, the first Prime Minister of UAE was Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and the president was Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The ruling dynasty of UAE is Al Maktoum family, a branch of Bani Yas tribe of a powerful Bedouin clan. They share a lineage with the Al Nahyan dynasty of Abu Dhabi. The king of Abu Dhabi is always elected President while the king of Dubai is always elected Prime Minister, making the posts hereditary. The present ruler is Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Eventually the Constitution of the United Arab Emirates was framed and came into effect in the year 1971 and it provides a legal and political framework for the governance of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a federation of seven emirates. In May 1996, this draft was permanently accepted. Having supported the military operations against the Taliban in Afghanistan (2001) and Saddam Hussein in Iraq (2003), it has now expressed solidarity of support for the Global War on Terrorism as well.

Presently UAE borders Oman and Saudi Arabia and shares its shores with Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Iran. It is comprised of seven emirates namely Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain The capital of the country is Abu Dhabi and this also happens to be the largest of all the emirates, the smallest being Ajman and the land-locked being Fujairah.
